Myrtle Rust
The South American myrtle rust (Urendo rangeli) was detected in NSW last year.
This fungal disease is impossible to eradicate, it is carried by wind, insects and bees, also by contaminated clothing and infected plant material. All myrtaceous plants are potentially susceptible, for a list of plants go to http://www.horti.com.au/2010/12/02/myrtle-rust-infections/
The disease is characterized by yellow pimples some lesions are purple in colour leaves may become buckled or twisted, myrtle rust destroys new foliage, stunts growth and can also kill the plant. Infected plants should not be removed or destroyed doing so would spread the disease.
If you feel that you may have an infected plant call the Exotic Plant Pest Hotline 1800 084 881 all infections of myrtle rust must be reported, for more information and pictures go to http://australianwildflowers.com.au/__files/f/5990/Myrtle%20Rust%20fact%20sheet.pdf
