Allamanda Double Yellow

Allamanda Double Yellow is a gorgeous plant with beautiful glossy green foliage and very large flowers. Flowers are trumpet shaped, double and yellow in colour. The flowers are short lived, usually not lasting any longer than 2 days, but new flowers are created almost year round, and this plant is almost always in flower.

Although this plant is not a climbing plant, it lends itself really well to being tied around unsightly poles or trees. The long trailing branches can be easily directed and tied up. Without support, you can prune it into a gorgeous shrub, which would be covered in yellow flowers! I have 2 growing up each end of the verandah (I’ve twisted it around the poles and kepAllamanda double yellow climbing plantt it there with ties), and have left it to trail along the roof; it looks absolutely stunning, smells delicious and gets compliments all the time. It would reach about 5m in lenght and is fast growing.

It would be suitable to use as a spectacular, fast growing screen or hedge, as it can be pruned right from when the plants are very young. Pruning it right from the start will encourage a bushy habit, and will make a nice thick hedge or screen.

The Golden Trumpet is very easy to grow and will be an outstanding feature in the garden. It needs minimal water and can Allamanda Double yellow tropical plantsbe grown in full sun to part shade. It needs regular applications of fertiliser to perform at its best, and is best in frost-free areas.

Common names: Yellow Allamanda, Golden Trumpet, Buttercup Flower, Yellow Bell, Golden Cup, Golden Allamanda, Yellow Trumpet Vine

Some additional general garden plants grow notes:

ON ARRIVAL:

Soaking:

When you receive your Allamanda plants, unwrap them carefully, and give their roots a good soak in seaweed solution or water for a couple of hours. You can pour left-over seaweed solution on the plant after you have potted it up.

Pot size:

Small Allamanda's (seedling size or 50mm tube size) are suited to 125mm pots. Larger Allamanda's (100mm pots and 125mm pots) are suited to 200mm pots, or straight into the ground in the garden. Choose the right pot size for your plants. Don’t choose a huge pot in the hope the plant will grow faster, as it won’t!

Potting mix:

Allamanda's are well suited to pots. Use a well draining potting mix which is of good quality. You can mix your own, or purchase a pre-mix from garden centres.

Fertilising:

Allamanda's, and most plants in general, appreciate good, nutrient-rich soil, and will grow well with a regular application of the right fertiliser. We recommend using a slow release fertiliser (such as Osmocote) for Allamanda's and most other garden plants, and also add lots of organic matter to the soil. Plants thrive with regular application of blood & bone, Dynamic Lifter or other organic fertiliser, which adds to your soil. You can also add slow release regularly to really kick them on. Some foliage plants, including Allamanda's, will love a regular feed with liquid fertiliser, as it is both absorbed through the foliage, and the soil. You can use a specific liquid fertiliser for flowering to give the plant a flowering boost. We don't recommend using liquid & slow release fertilisers at the same time, however, seaweed and fish emulsions are fine.

Watering:

Make sure you water in your plants really, really well! You need to get air bubbles out of the soil, as roots die when they come into contact with air bubbles. This might cause them to die back, prohibits them from thriving and might even cause death. It is one of the most important things to do when re-potting plants! Once watered in, water your plants regularly. The rate would depend on the pot size. Most leafy plants will give you an indication of when they need watering, but it’s best to not let it get that far. You can stick your finger in the soil to check, the soil should feel moist to your second knuckle. If it feels dry, water. It is best to water when the plant needs it, and water well, rather than watering small amounts. This will stop the roots from developing properly. Make sure you don’t overwater to avoid root rot and cloggy soil. Most plants need less water during winter. Pots will need more watering than plants in the ground.

Position:

Keep your Allamanda's in a protected position away from heat, sun, draughts etc. until you see some new growth, such as a new shoot or leaf. The bigger plants (in 125mm pots in our nursery) can be planted straight in to the garden without first potting up, but during hot times it might be wise to create a shade structure for the first couple of weeks. Once they have accustomed to their new climate and environment, you can start adjusting them to their final position in the garden, or pot. Slowly adjust them to full sun, and keep them protected from frost and wind for as long as possible. Growing plants up in pots until they’re nice and strong will ensure a good start in the garden, so we recommend growing them in pots for a while first. If you are planting them out, ‘tree guard’ are a good thing, and so are structures around the plant with shade cloth. Make sure you mulch well when you plant them in the garden – mulch conditions your soil, protects roots and saves water!
