5 great tips to grow Palm Trees succesfully

Palm Trees in general are great garden plants which, once established, are very low maintenance. Palms like very fertile soil which is well-draining but moisture retentive.

  • Adding mulch is one of the best things that you can do for palms in your garden. You can use grass clippings which are very high in nitrogen. Getting mulch from your local tip is also a great way of getting free mulch. We have found this to be one of the best mulches we could get. Mulch is especially good when it has been left to compost well.
  • Keep grassy weeds away from your palms. Grass robs all nutrient from your soil and takes it away from your palm trees. It also soaks up all moisture.
  • Use organic AND chemical fertiliser. Osmocote has a new product which has both in one, slow release and organic fertiliser in one simple application. The slow release fertiliser will make your palms grow faster and the organic part of it feeds your soil. Using an organic fertliser encourages worms and good bacteria's, and other helpful insects. This will enhance your soil, growing healthier, stronger plants which are more pest resistant.
  • Pick appropriate palms for the conditions in your garden, your location and your climate. You can use our grow notes and comprehensive product descriptions to read about the different palms and their growing needs
  • Protect your palms while young. Provide young palms with a shade cover for the first couple of years, at least at the hottest parts of the day. Young palms should be gradually adapted to full sun and a shade cloth roof, or 'tree guard' are a great, if not essential, addition - this is crucial to success!

Enjoy your palms!
