There is an amazing, possibly overwhelming, range of tropical garden plants available, both in online plant nurseries and local garden centres. Some are Australian native tropical plants, and some exotic, but you’re sure to find a variety suitable for your garden. There are even tropical plants available for gardens in the cooler south of Australia, and even gardens prone to frost. Below are some of our favourite tropical garden plants, and tropical plant varieties. We believe these plants are the building blocks for a tropical garden, and our online nursery shop will help you find varieties suitable for any garden, tropical or temperate!
Frangipani trees. Frangipani’s are one of the true symbols of the tropics. They have flowers in the most amazing colours, from pinks to purples and reds to yellows. They are suitable to frost free gardens only and grow more shrub-like in cooler climate gardens.
The Malaysian Orchid/Showy Medinilla (Medinilla magnifica). Medinilla magnifica is, in our opinion, the most stunning tropical flowering plant available to buy online. The flowers are bright pink and up to 30cm long and 15cm wide. They hang down from the main plant, framed by big veined foliage, making this a perfect potted plant or general garden plant. It’s only suited to frost free tropical gardens or humid warm spots indoors or in a greenhouse.
The Sago Palm (Cycas revoluta). This amazing plant is not actually a palm, but a member of the Cycad family. It is a true tough-as-nails garden plant, and is not only very drought hardy, it is frost hardy to several degrees as well! There’s not a single Australian garden which couldn’t grow a Sago Palm, and every garden should have at least one!- Gingers
. Any ginger is a good ginger! Ginger plants aren’t just for eating; they are also amazing tropical garden plants. Some provide amazing foliage whilst being easy to grow, such as the Spiral Ginger (Costus pictus) and the Red Backed Native Ginger (Alpinea caerulea) which has a beautiful maroon colour on the back of each leaf. Others have very impressive flowers such as the Beehive Ginger (Zingiber spectabile), with its great red beehive-shaped cones. - Palm Trees. Wh
at garden can do without Palm Trees? Palm trees provide height in your garden, and also a canopy for your other plants. The palm family is huge, with many palms being frost hardy such as the little Dwarf Date Palm (Phoenix roebelenii) and the elegant Lady Palm (Rhapis excelsa). Others are the true tropicals, such as the Ruffled Fan Palm (Licuala grandis) and the Triandra or Bamboo Palm (Areca triandra). Our favourite palms are the ones with colour, such as the Red Crownshaft palm (Areca vestiaria ‘Red Form’), the Flamethrower Palm (Chambeyronia hookeri) and the Pink Crown Palm (Dypsis Pink Crown). There’s the impressive palms like the Travellers Palm (Ravenala madagascariensis) and the Cuban Royal Palm, and the littlies such as the Metallic Palm (Chamaedorea metallica), which only grows to 60cm tall. Browse all our palm trees online. - Orange Lily (Clivia miniata). Cl
ivia plants are the solution to those dry, shady spots in the garden where nothing else will grow. They are tough as old boots, very drought hardy with their rhizomy roots which store moisture for later use, and their amazing orange flowers really brighten a dull spot in the garden! - Hibiscus. Hibiscus is in on
e word amazing. It is incredibly hardy and easy to grow. Flowers are impressive and range in colours from whites to pinks, reds to purples and more. They are excellent as a hedge or screen, as a potted plant, or as feature plant or backdrop in your garden.
- Philodendron. Philoden
dron is not only fantastic as house plant; many varieties are perfect for use in the garden as well. Philodendron Xanadu is one of the most popular landscaping plants, excellent for borders and gardens, and Philodendron Imperial Red and Imperial Green are well suited to pots indoors as house plants.
Mozes in a Basket (Rhoeo spathacea). The perfect ground cover for your tropical garden – beautiful coloured foliage, with green on top and purple on the bottom. Fill your empty spots in the garden with Mozes in a Basket to keep the weeds down and to cover the ground to stop evaporation and direct water to where it’s needed. It’s just like living mulch!
- Canna Lilies. It doesn’t get much more easy to gr
ow than the Canna Lily, and our Orange/Yellow variety will stand out like.... a stunning flower amongst foliage! Truly show stopping flowers. We’ll have the dwarf red variety available very shortly as well.
