Palms, Palms, Palms - Must-have garden plants
Beautiful Palms captivate the mind and please the eye. A simple palm in the parlour brightens the day like a tropical getaway and because of this allure, palms have widespread availability. Palm trees are also a popular landscaping fixture because of their remarkable ability to add character to many garden themes. More and more people are seeking out palm nurseries and the adoration is deserving of these unique plants and trees. Even in the coldest regions, you could order palms online or find local nurseries nurturing baby palms in their greenhouses.
A palm nursery can grow these tropical plants anywhere and that means so can you.
Palms for Home: Indoor and Outdoor Palms
The Parlour Palm is small, simple and beautiful. This quaint palm, scientific name: Chamaedorea elegans, grows at ground level beneath the lush canopy of Central American rainforests. These palms grow about 2m tall, giving them the perfect size to be enjoyed indoors or to be grown outside, solitary or in clumps, with the garden plants.
Indoors or out, the Parlour Palm is considered a low maintenance tropical. Whether a single tree potted in your living space or a clump in your backyard garden, the gorgeous light green foliage of the Parlour Palm needs to be grown in a shady, sheltered spot. Since they don’t need much light, this is a benefit to growing them in your home; these palms are highly tolerant of dark rooms. They like a consistently moist soil but not drenched, so check the moisture with your finger so they are not overwatered. Another added benefit for your garden or living space is that the Parlour Palm is frost hardy and known to survive at -10 degrees Celsius.
Growing Tips for Palms
Growing palm trees requires care and dedication. Knowing a palm’s particular species and characteristics will help ensure you provide the right amount of light, water, soil and nutrients. Even the hardiest of palms need attention and by a general inspection of the soil and foliage, you can determine what it needs to thrive (or commonly referred to as making the plant “happy”).
They need a proper place to grow well and if you are starting a palm nursery, most baby palms like a warm area with good sun exposure. Nurture these little palms with close attention to the particular species care instructions and the results are gorgeous, strong, and mature palms for many years of enjoyment.
Popular Species of Palms
Many species of palms are available for indoor and outdoor use. Palm nurseries are found in many areas but you can also buy plants online. Do your research and pick the palms most suitable for your growing conditions.
Majestic Palm (Ravenea rivularis): The Majestic Palm’s natural habitat is within and along the rivers of central Madagascar. It is a tall, very popular palm with a smooth white self cleaning trunk, and a beautiful crown of feathery bright green leaves.
Cocos/Queen Palm (Syagrus romanzoffiana): This palm is native to Brazil and Argentina. Tall and slender with a grey trunk, the large yellow green leaves of these palms are also easy to grow. They are drought and frost tolerant, and as a nursery palm, the young plants are able to withstand full sun from an early age.
Cabbage Tree Palm (Livistona Australis): These tall and handsome fan palms are native to the east coast of Australia. The trunk is smooth and narrow and topped by a crown of plaited fan shaped leaves. The bud is edible when young, hence the name Cabbage Palm. Masses of creamy white flowers appear in spring then followed by fruit which are black when ripe.
