Avocados are easily grown.

Getting a great Avocado has never been easier. Ordering Avocados is simple, convenient and many varieties are available from online fruit handlers.  The exciting idea to me (the novice gardener) is to grow my own Avocados!  I have read many articles on the topic online and most suggest that Avocados are easy to grow. The idea with any plant is to follow the plants given care instructions and don’t compromise the necessities.

Recently, I was notified that the Avocado tree will be available here at National Tropical Plants. When I find out more I will add a link so you can discover this great plant for yourself.

Here is the Avocado Tree product description:

The Avocado is a pear-shaped fruit which is native to subtropical climates. The green skin of the Avocado fruit is quite firm and the inside is a creamy yellow - green flesh which has a sweet and salty but almost nutty flavour.

The roots of the Avocado tree are quite shallow and the soil should dry between watering. Depending on the climate this could mean watering once a day or once a week. Overwatering and puddles could rot the roots and base.  New plants should be protected from frost and adult plants are also very sensitive to frost and will begin to damage around 2 Celsius.
Avocado trees prefer full sun but during the first few years, when young, they will need some protection from extended direct sun in the summer. Once the roots develop a solid structure the plant will produce foliage that will protect its sensitive bark from direct sunlight.

Full grown Avocado trees can reach 20 metres tall but if they are pruned back before blossoming, the trees can be maintained to be 10-12 metres in height.

Avocado Tree Growing Tip:

The best time to plant the Avocado tree is in the spring, this helps in preventing summer sun damage. The tree benefits from coarse / bark-base mulch.
