Adenium obesum (Desert Rose)The Desert Rose (Adenium obesum) is a succulent which grows in a shrub-like manner, no more than about 1.5 m tall. It has swollen roots and stem bases to store water from which it survives during times of drough, making this an excellent plant for gardens in dryer parts of Australia.

The swollen roots, also called 'caudex', eventually branch into multiple stems with age. The Desert Rose has beautiful flowers, which are available in a variety of colours, from white to nearly black and everything in between. Adenium obesum is hugely popular throughout the world, and many new flower colours are being created daily.

Adenium obesum has been seen to reach heights of up to 4.5m tall in some of its tropicAdenium obesum (Desert Rose) plantal African races. It likes to grow in sundrenched rock outcrops and is heat- and sunhardy.

The Desert Rose requires excellent drainage and a spot in full sun. In pots it can be succesfully grown in part shade but flower performance will be less than in full sun. A specific cacti and succulent potting mix should be used, or some sand or perlite can be added to the soil to increase drainage.

They can be grown outside in the garden in frost-free areas and perform extremely well with a minimum of fuss. No additional watering is needed once they have established themselves and they rarely suffer from diseases or pests.

In climates where frost is experienced, Adeniums can be grown against a hot, sunny wall with adenium obesum redoverhead cover as it will need to be protected from frost, or they can be grown in greenhouses or glass houses with high light levels.

Adenium obesum is one of the most drought and heat tolerant plants and can be very well grown in pots. Although very drought hardy, watering through summer and autumn promotes leaf growth and prolongs flowering.

Other common names are: Desert Rose, Impala Lily, Sabi Star
