Acalypha

Acalypha plants are part of the Euphorbia family. They are shrubby type plants with beautiful colours and shape to their foliage. Colours range from green and gold, to red, to yellow and pink. They are extremely tough and drought hardy and are excellent for Australian gardens.

Acalypha’s originate in tropical and subtropical areas, so will need to be grown in a frost free location. Acalypha plants can be used as a colourful backdrop for other tropical plants, and are excellent as a hedge or screen. They should be grown in rich soil. Fertilise them regularly with a slow release fertiliser, or organic equivalent to keep the foliage lush and healthy.

Acalyphas are very fast growing and low maintenance. They are not prone to diseases, and although the large leaves can attract grasshoppers and other foliage feeders, they often grow faster than the damage caused. Acalypha plants can be cut back if they need to be kept at a certain size or shape.
