Yellow Mangosteen/Native Gardenia (Randia fitzalanii)
This is a beautiful plant which we used to have a few years ago, and finally we're able to offer it to you again. It is Randia fitzalanii, commonly called Yellow Mangosteen, or Native Gardenia. It is a rainforest tree, native to the North Coast of Queensland in Australia. It grows to only 5m tall, making is perfect for almost any garden. Randia fitzalanii has nice glossy green foliage, and the flowers look a lot like the flowers of Gardenia’s, which is where the name ‘Native Gardenia’ comes from. The flowers are highly fragrant.
Besides being stunning, it's also appreciated as bush tucker, so useful as well as decorative! The Yellow Mangosteen produces large, edible , slightly sweet yellow fruits, which are are eaten raw by Aboriginal people.
Although Randia fitzalanii is a native to the tropical regions of Australia, it has been reported growing well as far south as Sydney. This edible plant is best grown in warm, moist situations, but can handle very light, very short frost. It is also drought hardy once established, but it's best watered regularly. Grow your Randia in a sheltered position, in full sun to part shade and, as with all your garden plants, mulch well! Keep up the fertiliser too...
Randia fitzalanii is perfect for containers, close to the house to enjoy the wonderful fragrance, or as a small shade tree in the garden. Randia fitzalanii roots are non-invasive
