Did you say Organic Wine?
Some Australians may think all Wine is organic but ‘organic’ is not the fact that wines are made from grapes. The truth is that many vineyards use inorganic pesticides, growing agents, fertilizers and preservatives which are 'chemicals' developed in laboratories. The vineyards in Australia that are committed to organic wines do not use chemicals from start to finish or seedling to bottle. The vineyards behind this movement believe that their wines actually have an overall better flavour and they credit the support of this positive initiative as added sensation to enjoying organic wine.
The Concept of Organic Farming
The concept of organic farming is to overcome challenges by using natural solutions and not chemicals. The focus is to respect the cycles of nature and stop the use of harmful pesticides, growing agents and preservatives which affect the taste of the grapes, damage the environment, and could be harmful to the human body. Instead of a pesticide an organic vineyard may release ladybugs, wasps, or bees to consume smaller pests that are harmful to the grapevines; even chickens have been used in vineyards to control pesky worm pests. Another popular technique for an organic vineyard is to create roosts for owls and other birds of prey so they can naturally hunt unwanted rodents that feed on the vines. As an alternative to preservatives, wineries may use dark colored bottles that limit light therefore increasing the life of their product naturally.
These vineyard's commitment to working in harmony with nature sets Australian organic wines as the new standard for a great wine.
