The Alexander Palm (Archontophoenix alexandrae) is an ornamental palm tree native to Australia. It occurs along much of the Queensland east coast. Alexander Palms have slightly bulbous, pale gray trunks to around 20cm in diameter. The Alexander Palm grows to around 15m tall, and is self cleaning which is a fantastic feature for any palm. No dangerous missions on a ladder - fronds will come to you themselves! Fronds are 2.4-3 m long and leaves are distinctive for silvery white colour of their undersides. Alexander Palms have plain green crown shafts, and cream flowers. They are very popular palms for frost free conditions.and are best grown in a full sun position. The Alex Palm has a shallow root system, which is why it really pays off to mulch well around the base. Mulch will keep the roots warm in winter and cool in summer. Water will also penetrate the soil easier and reach the roots of the palm without too much run off. Water during dry periods for best results.
