Podocarpus macrophyllus "Maki" is a small to medium size subtropical evergreen. Grown as a tree reaching 20 m tall or cut back to form a shrub 2-3m tall, they thrive outdoors in the warmest regions and are desired for their foliage which is vibrant chartreuse with contrasting greens.
The lovely foliage forms scales that swell up reddish purple and fleshy like berries. This tree responds well to pruning and as they mature, the "Maki" is popular as a bonsai.
The Podocarpus macrophyllus likes sun or partial shade with moderate to regular water and does well indoors if these conditions are provided. These plants are pest free and low maintenance.
Supplied as:small plants/seedlings, aprox 10cm tall.
Other Common NamesShrubby Yew Pine, Buddhist Pine, Fern Pine, Shrubby Yew, Kusamaki, Inumaki
The names without the word "pine" are becoming less common to more accurately describe this tree which is not a pine.
Growing TipsStake young trees until trunk develops.

The Maki makes for a great bonsai and doesn't demand much water. The Maki shrubs I have growing along the property line has good growth and the foliage has kept a lovely green.
