Ponytails look like very chunky palm trees, and have a massive swollen base to their trunks. Ponytail trunks can reach 3 meters in diameter! The tree itself can reach heights of around 9m tall, although it will take many years to get to this size. They are native to the dry, desert regions of Mexico and Southern United States. The trunk tapers upward and then branches, with each branch supporting a dense crown of long, strappy leaves. Masses of small white flowers are produced in summer, followed by spectacular stems of pinkish, 3-winged seeds on mature female plants. Ponytail Palms are drought and heat tolerant due to them storing water in their swollen trunks and branches. They grow well in most parts of Australia, as long as it is frost free. They are well suited to pots. Beaucarnea should be grown in a full sun position (potted plants can be grown in part shade), in well draining soil. Potted indoor plants need high light levels and a warm position. Water well during summer but sparingly during winter to avoid trunk-rot. Common names: Ponytail palm Elephant’s foot Supplied as: plants, 20-30 cms 4-5 cm cordex in 10 cm pots.
