There are some 780 described coconut varieties around the world. The Coconut Palm is often called the 'Tree of Life' for its versatility and usefulness. Not only is coconut juice beneficial for your health, but almost all parts of the plant have a purpose. Coconut meat is full of vitamins, and Coconut juice, or water, can be drunk straight out of the nut itself, as a nutritious, refreshing drink. Coconut Oil is great for cooking, as an alternative to butter, as a conditioner, skin moisturizer, you could even drive your car on it!

Tall coconuts are the most widely known variety, but for backyards and smaller production we now also offer Dwarf Coconuts. In general, dwarf coconuts are self pollinating, high yielding, easy to harvest, tolerant of diseases such as ‘Lethal Yellowing’, poor soils and they mature early. Many will fruit within four years in a moist tropical climate and reach full output by 6 years, often with coconuts touching the ground. Dwarfs reach heights from 5m to 12m, depending on variety, although at a much slower pace than talls, as generally all the palm proportions are smaller. Two distinct varieties are on offer, the Robust Dwarf Coconut Palm, and the more common Fragile Dwarf Coconut Palm.

Cocos nucifera, the standard tall Coconut Palm, is the true symbol of the tropics. It grows to aprox 30m tall and is long lived, with graceful fronds. It is generally more hardy than the dwarf varieties, especially in areas outside of the tropics, and is longer lived than the dwarf coconut. It lives for 80-120 years, where dwarves live 40-60 years. Tall coconuts are more often used in commercial plantations due to higher copra yield and longer productive lifespan.

Dwarf Coconut Palm

In Stock: 10
Dwarf Coconuts flower in their 3rd year in ideal conditions. They are suitable as indoor plants for 18-24 months. Dwarf coconuts palms are generally precocious, which means they increase in size at a slower rate but mature early. Dwarf Coconuts are higher yielding than tall Coconuts, as fruits have been selected for larger volume-to-husk ratio. Dwarf Coconut palms are generally self-pollinating, due to the male & female flowers opening at the same time, and they grow to approximately 1/3 of the size of the tall coconuts. Dwarf Coconuts grow best in tropical conditions, but you could try growing them as far south as Coffs Harbour in Coastal conditions, or grow them indoors as house plant.......for more click on title or 'product details'.
