Jaboticaba (Myrciaria cauliflora)

Ask a question about this product

The Jaboticaba is a very useful, ornamental evergreen tree. It originates in Brazil and slowly grows 8-10m tall. It is a member of the Myrtle family, and has distinguishing pale, peeling bark. It is an ideal fruiting tree for smaller gardens due to its compact size and abundance of fruits.

Small white flowers are followed by deep purple to black fruits which attach directly to the braches. Fruit is very similar to grapes with colourless, sweet pulp. The Jaboticaba tree can fruit 5-6 times a year, and first fruits are borne between 5-10 years of age.

Fruits are most often used in jam and wine but can be eaten fresh once fully ripe. Fruits can be frozen whole and served with ice cream or salad. Skins can be a bit tough and does contain tanning so is best removed.

Growing:
Grow in fertile, moist, well draining soil in full sun to part shade. Best soil is slightly acidic, Ph being 5.5-6.5. Frost hardy to aprox -3 once established. Water regularly and fertilise.

Give Jaboticaba trees plenty of space in the garden for best development, with a minimum space of 5m apart. Trees can be pruned to size if needed.

Suitable for growing in pots and containers.

Propagation:
Usually from seed and are fairly true to type. Only 1 tree is needed to bear fruits, but multiple plants may increase yield. Seeds germinate in 1-2 months. Grafting and air layering are also used.

Common names:
Jaboticaba, Brazilian Grape Fruit Tree, Brazilian Grape, Jabuticaba

Supplied as: plants 15-20cm. Pot size: 75mm

Jaboticaba grows well in Bundaberg, Queensland. Seems to grow well in tough conditions, scaly dry soil and minimal additional watering. Plants have taken off after being planted 2 years ago.
