Lady Palm (Rhapis excelsa)

Ask a question about this product

Lady Palms are very elegant, graceful multi stemmed palms, growing to around 3-4 meters tall. They are often called ‘Bamboo palm’ due to the coarse, fibrous material with which the canes are covered. Lady Palm has deep green, glossy leaves; stems can be covered in brown fibres.

Rhapis excelsa is easy to grow, being adaptable to a wide range of conditions and soil types. It prefers neutral to slightly acid, well draining soils, and greatly benefits from regular application of compost / organic matter / organic fertilizer.

It is best grown in part to full shade, on the verandah, under trees, or a shady, sheltered spot in the garden. Rhapis excelsa can be grown in full sun, but leaves will yellow and can burn easily. Adequate water needs to be provided if this palm is to grow in full sun.

Lady Palms are quite cold hardy, handling temperatures as low as -5C. It would be an excellent palm tree for gardens down south! Rhapis excelsa prefers a high humidity and benefits from occasional spraying or hosing of foliage during hot weather.

Lady palms are the Queens of the indoor palms; they are incredibly hardy to low light, varying temperatures and pots. Lady Palms are slow growing which make them even more ideal for indoor & potted use.

Common names: Lady Palm, Bamboo Palm

Size: small plants, 5-15cm
