Pine nuts are a very ornamental, edible tree, growing 10-15m tall. They bear edible pine nuts, which are great in salads, pesto, baking, as a snack, and many other dishes. We particularly like pine nuts in pasta, with roasted pumpkin, sundried tomatoes and feta cheese.

Edible Lemon Grass often used for Thai cuisine. Tall grass-like plant with strong root system, native to India and Tropical Asia. It has a beautiful citrussy taste and scent and can be used dried or fresh.
Lemongrass oil is also made from this plant, smells beautiful and used as a pesticide and preservative. Very fast growing in warm areas and very drought hardy. Lemongrass needs well draining soil and full sun position, although they will thrive nearly anywhere.
Usable parts of the plant are the bottom of the stems for cooking, and the leaves for tea.

They do not like cold weather and are only suitable coastal Qld, Northern NSW, Topend of NT and north western WA.They will grow in full sun but are better in part shade. Plant in well draining soil consider a raised garden bed or slope, mulch well . Fertilize regually and water them often . This is a beautiful Philodendron with thick, aerial roots. It is a member of the Arum family, also called ‘aroids’, such as Anthurium & Monstera. It is evergreen and grows to around 3m tall. It has an
upright growth habit, and is not a climber like most other Philodendrons.
Leaves are very large and dark glossy green. Each leaf can grow
to almost 1m long! Being an aroid, this plant produces a long spathe, which is greenish white.
This Philodendron is native to Southern American rainforests.

Spiral Ginger  (Costus Pictus) Is a perennial native to Mexico. This Ginger never looks ratty like some other plants might in winter - it's lush, green and beautiful! The spiral ginger is a hardy vigorous growing ginger to 2m tall, with thin red spotted stems. Flowers are very nice, yellow with red stripes. It flowers throughout spring and summer, and flowers are edible; they are often added to salads.

The Spiral Ginger is best grown in part shade to part sun, but will grow well in full sun with adequate water. Mine are in full sun and they are my most lushious looking plant. The perfect backdrop for other flower plants, and perfect protection also as they grow incredibly fast. Costus pictus will grow in containers or in the ground in moist well drained rich soil.

Shell Ginger (Alpinia zerumbet) is a cold hardy ginger growing as far south as Melbourne, it has flowers that resemble sea shells which are white with pink tips, flowering in spring and summer in the cooler areas and all year round in the warmer parts of Australia, prefers morning sun and will grow in semi shade it can also be used for a screen plant. Grows up to 2 meters + the ginger likes rich organic soil in a moist well drained position and will tolerate dry conditions once established, can also be grown in a container but not as an indoor plant. When you receive your rhizomes plant them in a pot until established, plant the rhizomes with the new shoots/stem/buds pointing upwards no more than 3-4 cm under the soil with the shoots or buds above the soil, water thoroughly and then do not water again until the soil feels dry, keep moist when shoots start to grow. Use slow release fertilizer and keep the pots in a warm shady position until the leaves unfold then your ginger can be planted into your garden.

Zingiber spectabile (Beehive Ginger) is a native of Thailand and produces spectacular yellow/orange cones which fade to bright red in 4-8 weeks. Cones are large, 20-30cm tall. The cones grow on short spike from the base of the plant. In tropical areas the plant will grow all year around but in cooler climates goes dormant in winter. Plant in part shade soil should be well drained and moist. This Ginger will grow well in full sun as well in the subtropics and tropics, but foliage will be a lighter green and some sunburn might occur during very hot weather. Will grow as far south as Sydney.

One of our favourites! A beautiful tree from the Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia) family which produces big banana-like foliage. Foliage arranges itself in a fan-shaped form. Though technically not a palm tree, it is often called one because of the short palm-like trunk & foliage. It grows 7-15m tall. The Travellers Palm produces white flowers, followed by brown fruits. Seeds are a wonderful blue colour. It derives its name ‘Travellers Palm’ from the fact that it collects and holds rainwater in its leaf folds and flower bracts. Thirsty travellers knew to seek out this tree to collect water. Ravenala madagascariensis is a stunning tropical plant and would act well as a feature plant, or as back drop for other tropical plants. It is often used to line driveways and property entries, for which the fan shape lends itself very well.
